Cough treatment in children and adults with Chinese Medicine

The change of seasons is here, bringing with it cold, flu and cough. Chronic coughs tend to flare this time of year, too.

Below are a few suggestions to promote resiliency and take care of cough.

Acute cough happens due to a cold invasion, and can be accompanied with sore throat, fever, chills, body aches and headaches. The treatment varies, depending on if there is a sore throat or sweating. I suggest keeping a few small bottles of herbal formulas on hand so you can start them immediately as needed. I have put together kits for you to keep at home. They contain the formulas below, and a bottle of Dr. Bob's oil.

Taking herbs as soon as you notice a sniffle, chills or cough starting usually helps reduce duration significantly.

Herbal teas- Marjoram, thyme, basil and oregano with honey. most of us have these in our kitchens. A 1/2 teaspoon each of the dried herbs or a few springs of the fresh herbs if you have them growing. pour a quart of boiling water over them and infuse for 20 min or so, add honey and drink. Will help reduce congestion and clear the lungs. Thyme tea alone is delicious with honey.

Keep some herbal formulas at home- I usually recommend three formulas to keep on hand. kudzu decoction (gegen tang), minor bupleurum (xiao chai hu tang) and Xiao qing long tang. In my experience, these are the most common acute onset formulas to keep in medicine cabinet for the first day or two of a cold/flu.

Dr. Bob's Oil- a medicated herbal oil, containing peppermint, cinnamon, licorice and other chinese herbs. It is excellent for rubbing on chest and back to relieve congestion, cough and nasal congestion. It has helped my children get to sleep, and I put a drop under my nose to prevent catching the bug, too. Excellent for aches/pains.
